Ethiopia: a country known for its “Mocha coffees”. Do you know why these cafes are called this way?
Ethiopian coffees were once exported from the Port of Mocha in Yemen (in the Arabian Peninsula). Hence the name Moka coffee.

Above all, be aware that Ethiopia, the cradle of coffee, is renowned for its Arabica coffees and its highlands (1500-2300 meters) giving coffee exceptional organoleptic characteristics (especially in terms of aromatic complexity and liveliness).
What does coffee production represent in the local economy of the country? What are the famous production areas of Ethiopia?

THE LEGEND OF ETHIOPIAN MOCHA COFFEE

First of all, know that the origin of coffee has its roots in Ethiopia.
Indeed, the story claims that a shepherd named Kaldi discovered the exciting virtues of coffee. One of his goats jumping after eating cherries from a coffee tree (around the XNUMXth century).
Thus, the culture of coffee and its use were then disseminated by the monks to keep themselves awake during their long services.
In the XNUMXth century, the port of Mocha in Yemen was created and Ethiopian coffee began to be exported.
This is why, for a long time, Ethiopia kept the monopoly of the market.

COFFEE AT THE HEART OF THE COUNTRY'S ECONOMY

Even today, coffee occupies a central place in the Ethiopian economy with 400 hectares of areas for coffee cultivation.
Thus, Ethiopia is the 5th largest producer and the 10th largest exporter in the world: 60% of its production is exported, ie 172 tonnes/year.
Moreover, many families live thanks to the coffee trade. Coffee importers and roasters are increasingly trying to create fair and sustainable partnerships with producers in order to provide them with fair incomes and a medium/long term vision of their trade.
Thus, the latter can thus anticipate their production from one year to the next.

RECOGNIZED PRODUCTION AREAS

There are 4 major production areas in Ethiopia. 2 of them have a good reputation:

Sidamo region

First of all, located in the South of Ethiopia, the region of Sidamo owes its name to an ethnic group living in the South-West of Ethiopia called the “Sidamas”.

Moreover, several very high quality washed coffees come from this region, such as Moka Sidamo (very fruity coffee, a delight!) or even Moka Yrgacheffe (coffee that is both fruity and floral).
Thus, 14% of the country's production is made in this region of Sidamo.

Kaffa region

Also, Kaffa is a province in southwestern Ethiopia whose capital is Jimma.

First of all, this region is made up of two large production areas renowned for their coffees:

  • First of all, Limu for the production of washed coffees,
  • And also, Jimma for the production of natural coffees.

We use Moka Jimma coffee: it is a very aromatic coffee with notes of citrus fruits and yellow fruits (grapefruit, pineapple).

The Kaffa region alone produces 27% of the country's total production.

EXCEPTIONAL AREAS

Wallaga region

Then, the Walläga region, which produces 40% of the country's production, is made up of washed and natural Moka coffees.

This terroir is probably the highest in the world! At more than 2400 meters above sea level, coffee trees grow in the shade of forest and fruit trees. The scarcity of oxygen provides an important natural sweetness to coffee cherries.

Many coffees from this region are extremely famous, such as Moka Gidaamii in particular

Harar region

Finally, the Harrar region is located in the eastern part of the country, at an altitude of more than 1885 meters.
The coffees from this region are naturally sun-dried.
Finally, 19% of the global coffee production is grown here.
It is a complex and aromatic coffee with delicious notes of undergrowth and ripe fruit.
