Exceptional coffees: discover the best coffees in the world

best-cafes-in-the-world-1 Exceptional coffees: discover the best coffees in the world

Among the innumerable amount of coffees, some have an exceptional flavor and they deserve you to taste them at least once in your life. Their names sound pleasant to your ears: Blue Mountain, Kona, Bourbon Pointu… Their aromas make you travel, but not all of them deserve their reputation and their outrageously high price! Others, on the other hand, are less known, even though they are excellent. Quai Sud takes stock of the best coffees in the world.

Best coffees in the world: the great vintages of coffee

To qualify a coffee as exceptional, it must first meet objective criteria, such as a clearly identified terroir, cherries selectively harvested at full maturity and a quality aromatic profile. We call specialty coffee ou high grade coffee coffees rated more than 80 out of 100 by the SCAA (Specialty Coffee Association of America), i.e. only 1% of world coffee production!

Among the cafes at the top of this hierarchy is Jamaica's Blue Mountain. It is undoubtedly the best known of exceptional coffees and it has lived up to its reputation! Cultivated between 550 and 1700 m above sea level in only 4 towns on the island, it benefits from volcanic soil and abundant rainfall. The mist slows the ripening of the cherries and develops its aromas of flowers, grass and nuts. It is sweet, slightly acidic but without bitterness. Like the grands crus, it is packaged in small barrels, which gives it a woody taste.

Other aromatic coffees really worth dipping your lips in ☕:

  • Bourbon Pointu : grown almost exclusively in Réunion (formerly Ile Bourbon), it is not very bitter and develops intense aromas of citrus, lychee, cocoa and caramel. Its aromatic complexity has no equal. Without doubt THE best coffee in the world.
  • Hawaii's Kona : benefiting from the Hawaiian microclimate, this coffee with delicate aromas of hazelnut, spices and butter is soft as velvet 😍
  • The Yirgachffe of Ethiopia : it's our favorite at Quai Sud! This mocha grown on the high plateaus of AIDS is the origin of all the coffees in the world. Not very acidic, it is very aromatic: jasmine, peach, lemon, chocolate... An explosion of flavors at very low prices.

Kopi Luwak and Black Ivory: unexpected… and controversial coffees

Among the best coffees in the world, two of them have made a name for themselves in recent years for their unique flavor and their unexpected manufacturing process. The Kopi Luwak of Indonesia literally means civet coffee, a small animal that loves ripe coffee cherries. The cherries ferment in his stomach, thus losing all bitterness and acidity, then they will be recovered... in the animal's droppings 😳. Same process for Thailand's Black Ivory, except that the animal is an elephant… It's hard life as a coffee farmer 😪.

Once washed and stripped of their pulp, the cherries are dried in the sun then roasted to give coffees to the complex flavor profile. Kopi Luwak is renowned for its notes of cocoa, hazelnut, musk and argan, as for Black Ivory, it develops aromas of dark chocolate, spices, cherry and grass.

These atypical coffees are nevertheless very controversial. Their production is confidential, and like everything rare, they are very expensive: from 1000€ to 2000€ per kilo 💰. A price all the more unjustified as the counterfeits are numerous, and the animals used are kept in captivity in revolting conditions 🥺. Enough to give your coffee a particularly bitter taste…

Lesser known but equally good coffees

Let's leave aside these indecent coffees to discover other less known but much more affordable and largely as good coffees:

  • Panama Geisha : grown on the volcanic lands of Panama, this coffee from Ethiopia with marked acidity is remarkable for its fruity notes (peach, berries, citrus fruits, mango, etc.) enhanced by jasmine and honey. A bright and sparkling filter coffee…
  • Kenya AA : its large grains allow a homogeneous roasting. Grown in a tropical climate in rich soil, this acidic coffee has very marked citrus notes and sweet, almost candied fruits.
  • The Sigri of Papua : this full-bodied coffee with great aromatic finesse is of the same variety as Blue Mountain, but much less expensive (€30 per kilo against €150 minimum).
  • Australia's Skybury : a rare coffee of the Bourbon variety grown in Queensland, a hot and humid region in northeastern Australia. Very sweet and slightly acidic, it is a coffee washed at high speed to reveal its notes of chocolate and red berries when roasted. A UFO of the antipodes to discover absolutely.

Try these coffees renowned for their aromatic richness and to discover other flavors, but stay true to your preferences: the best coffee in the world will always be the one you love ❤.
